Hist\u00f3ricamente, los huracanes y las tormentas importantes causan estragos en nuestros sistemas de agua, provocando inundaciones inmediatas y problemas de turbidez. Pero meses despu\u00e9s pueden surgir otros problemas peligrosos. Los datos y los informes anecd\u00f3ticos predicen un aumento de la proliferaci\u00f3n de algas nocivas (FAN) en las estaciones c\u00e1lidas posteriores a estos eventos catastr\u00f3ficos debido a muchos factores, incluidas cantidades excesivas de lluvia, escorrent\u00eda de nutrientes y mayor capacidad de agua contenida en embalses y lagos.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

En Florida, la abundancia de lluvias del hurac\u00e1n Ian en 2022 inund\u00f3 ciudades, campos, campos de golf y tierras agr\u00edcolas. La inundaci\u00f3n condujo a la liberaci\u00f3n de un exceso de nutrientes generalmente ligados a los sedimentos. El afloramiento y la rotaci\u00f3n describen cuando una bah\u00eda o un lago poco profundo retrocede de un lado a otro antes de un hurac\u00e1n o un evento de viento fuerte, lo que hace que agua profunda, m\u00e1s fr\u00eda y rica en nutrientes suba a la superficie. Luego, cuando el agua vuelve al equilibrio dentro de la bah\u00eda o el lago, las HAB se alimentan de los nuevos nutrientes encontrados. El mismo concepto ocurre dentro de los lagos que experimentan inundaciones durante grandes tormentas cuando se alteran los sedimentos. El exceso de nutrientes se devuelve a la columna de agua, lo que permite que crezcan algas y cianobacterias, lo que contribuye a la degradaci\u00f3n continua de presas, lagos, r\u00edos y embalses, y aumenta exponencialmente la presi\u00f3n sobre las plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales y purificaci\u00f3n de agua.<\/p>\n

Conocer estos factores ambientales es esencial para comprender la importancia de tomar medidas de precauci\u00f3n para mitigar la aparici\u00f3n de estas floraciones de algas y cianobacterias antes de que se salgan de control.
